Passing on Family Traditions

My grandfather had honey bees and I have very vivid childhood memories of a kitchen filled with 5 gallon buckets coved with cheese cloth with honey straining through.  I remember the sweet taste of that childhood honey, it was magical.  I love the fact that my dad now sits with my daughter passing down his own father’s  passion to his granddaughter.  My daughter has suddenly become me, although I think she has a far great interest that I did.  I was just in it for the sweet stuff, she wants to know all about the bees and the process.

She has a God given love for all creatures great and small.

I am still in it for the magical sweet stuff but I am also enjoying capturing our family history through my lens.

I am so thankful for Family Tradition,

Garden Planting 2012

Last week was spring break in our area.  I would love to tell you that we went on an exotic vacation some where?  That is not the case though.  There was much work to be done and while my husband had the week off from work (he is a school teacher) he got busy tilling the garden.

023

This is only part, there is more tilling to be done.

021

We have plenty of tomato cages waiting for the plants to grow large enough.

030

Lots of seeds and

031

plants ready to be put into the soil.

019

I love a line of fresh plants.  It is such an exciting time.

023

My dad and Husband spent many hours on their knees planting all those little plants and seeds.

It was hard work

but it ill be worth it when we are eating tomato sandwiches.

A girl can dream, right?

Our First Honey Bees

On March 30th we got our first

 Honey Bees.

They seem to bee (ha) settling in nicely to their new colorful home.

We have 3 hives with about 20,000 bees each.

Over the next few weeks we will be adding  more bees to  several more locations.

We hope to have a small amount of honey by Fall and then increase our number of bees and amount of honey as the years go by.

206

I am hoping to get an invitation to the pick up of the next batch of bees,

so far it is a Granddad/Granddaughter only event.

I will keep my fingers crossed and hope they let me tag along with my camera.

207

I would love to get pictures of the pick up and maybe even some shots of them being released.
